Dispicable Injustice by Police leads innocent black man to death

January 6, 2009

This story has become a very tragic and explosive story on social networking sites like digg… yet I don’t see anything being covered of it on television.  Here is the link to a recent event in the Oakland area where a police man shot a cooperative black man for no apparent reason.

Yet another instance where racist police officers execute authority over innocent folks doing what they are supposed to do.  This story NEEDS coverage. In my opinion and many others, this is one of the most despicable, abominable events and is one that people need to see; luckily it was caught on camera.

Weekly Tip: Avoid Coffee on an Empty Stomach

December 22, 2008

Many of us love coffee in the morning.  So remember that drinking coffee on an empty stomach is different than having it during a meal.

Look Who´s Hiding in My Coffee

Drinking coffee on an empty stomach fills the stomach with hydrochloric acid thus leading to an increase in insulin production within your body.  Because there is no food for you to break down, the acid goes straight to the small intestines and is picked up by the bloodstream.  The first sips of coffee on an empty stomach makes us feel better because it releases glycogen stores, stores that feed the brain and nerves.  Unfortunately.. glycogen requires very little insulin.  So the more coffee we drink, the more the coffee and the stimulatory effect of caffeine causes us to begin releasing insulin.

Because of the high insulin levels, our fat release is blocked.  We are burning sugars and not burning any fat.  This is something many people ignore, weight loss really does come down to a science.  And doesn’t necessarily need to be incredibly strenous, instead understanding a few points on what to eat and when to eat can take you a long way.

Add this to your weight loss or fat loss factors - Avoid coffee on an empty stomach.

If you drink alcohol.. What’s the healthiest way to go?

December 22, 2008

Most of us know drinking alcohol isn’t good, especially when trying to build muscle or be healthy.. but many of us enjoy the occasional drink.  So let’s consider this question:  Is there a healthy way to drink alcohol?  The answer is technically NO. I’ve never run across any kind of evidence (please let me know if there is any) proving alcohol to bring any sort of health benefits.  So either way you’re going in the opposite direction when you drink.  Now the simple query of how to minimize damage.

The best way to sustain good health clearly is to not drink a lot, but here’s how to drink according to your goals:

1)  I want to drink a little of something!

If you want to drink something, and there’s a variety to choose from, go for wine!  Not only does it make you look classy, but a little bit doesn’t do you much harm in the end.

2)  I want to get wasted!

Getting wasted really isn’t good at all, especially on a common basis.  But if this is your goal, do it like the bums and get some whiskey!  Drink the hard liquor with with little else than just alcohol.  Vodka also works.

3)  I want to play beer pong!

Get really good at beer pong.

Alcohol takes a while to run its course so enjoy its effects!  Definitely avoid sugared-up drinks like hard lemonade and beer as well.  Alcohol, carbs, and sugars aren’t the best of combinations.  You get dehydrated, burn empty carbs, and stock up on the sugars and calories that really aren’t productive to the body so anytime you drink, try to do so in moderation.

The 3 Kinds of Gyms

December 19, 2008

How many of you are gym freelancers?  By that I mean you see the atmosphere, the differences between so many gyms you enter from the getgo.  Some places you see tons of bodybuilders, other places you see kiddies, and some you see lots of casual gymgoers - Here are the 3 kinds you have to choose from.

1)  The Average Gym

If anyone’s seen the movie Dodgeball.. this is Average Joe’s Gym.  This gym is full of people looking for any kind of exercise.  It’s a way to feel good, enjoy yourself, meet new people, and hopefully build new relationships and gain a sense of belonging.  It might even be a place you would just go to for a little bit to try and lose a few pounds.  How much does it cost?  Not much, there are usually some attractive deals to go after a wide market.  Locals and people of all ages can be found here.

2)  The Hardcore-Giant Resort Gym

Once again, if you’ve seen Dodgeball this may be Globo Gym (Lifetime Fitness or Gold Gym in real life).  Yeah you will see bodybuilders and athletes that have taken fitness and their genetics down to a science.  Gyms are a way of life to many of these folks.  You can also find people who spend loads of money on food, lifestyle, and luxury, so they look for top-of-the-line clubs with all kinds of luxurous goodies.. i.e.) steam rooms and rock climbing.  And yes, it’s a bit pricy.

3)  The Recreation

This gym usually is on a college campus, high school, at an employer, at a hotel.  You’ll meet a specific group of people of course, and usually with different goals.  You’ll see athletics like basketball, swimming, group classes, cycling, and usually you only go to a recreational gym because it’s part of a deal, free, or there’s a club that you are a part of.

So which gym are you?

Ectomorph: The Muscle Curse

December 18, 2008

Ectomorphic body type – lean bone structure, low muscle mass, high metabolism.  We’ve all seen these types of people.  Derek Jeter, Michael Phelps, Brad Pitt, and nearly any slim holllywood actress out there.

Being an ectomorph, I’ve lived much of my early life underweight… because I didn’t care at all about what to eat.  For us, it’s almost 80% of the way we look – muscle mass, muscle tone, and anything else all depends on one thing – Diet.

I was able to make significant gains (40lbs of weight).  By eating a plentiful amount of calories a day (like 4000).  But just like gains – we are cursed with losses.  Any excess cardio means we lose muscle.  Any insufficient nutrients means we lose our physique – all the hard work, gone.

Now granted, Endomorphs have just as many problems, mesomorphs are lucky.

Oh and creatine – don’t forget about that.  One time I literally lost 10 lbs in one day from losing all the waterweight I was carrying.  Creatine monohydrate helps retain fluid in the muscles so you have better workouts.. and when you stop taking it, all that disappears.

I heard Michael Phelps, being a sea monster during his training heyday, took 10000 calories a day just to maintain the kind of athleticism and replenish the energy he lost while training.

Remember when Brad Pitt was ripped for Troy and Fight Club?  No surprise, it all came with a diet and intense weight training.  And it’s all lost when we ectomorphs don’t maintain it.  See Burn After Reading.

Here are a few pieces of advice for ectomorphs to not only gain muscle, but keep it.

  1. Eat meals every 3 hours
  2. Drink Milk and Casein protein just before bedtime
  3. Minimize cardio.  If you do cardio make sure you eat the right foods to keep your body energized and don’t do it too intensely.
  4. Do compund muscle exercises.  (squats, dumbell raises, military press, rows)

That said, yes we burn fat in abundance!  But yes, we are also cursed with constantly-needy and catabolic bodies.  It’s not easy and takes some work, but we can grow to look fit, dextrous, strong, and muscular
